Nobody told me that the blog I almost did not start would one day replace my income. I sat on the idea for eight whole months, convinced I was too late, too ordinary, and too busy with kids to pull it off. Then one random Tuesday I bought a domain name, figured it out as I went, and my life has not been the same since.
If you have been thinking about how to start a blog but feel stuck, overwhelmed, or secretly scared it will not work for you, this post is for you. I am not going to sugarcoat anything. I am going to tell you exactly what I did, what I wish I had done sooner, and how you can start a blog and actually make money from it, even from your living room.
📌 Quick Note: This post contains affiliate links. I may earn a small commission if you purchase through them, at no extra cost to you.

What You Need to Know Before You Start a Blog
Here is the thing about blogging that nobody puts in the headlines: it is not fast money. I want to be honest about that. But it is real money, and it can grow over time in a way most jobs cannot.
When I started, I had zero experience. I did not know SEO or even what a hosting plan was. I just knew I wanted to earn from home without missing my kids growing up. That desire kept me going through the slow months.
Before you start a blog, understand that you are building something. Think of it like planting a garden. You put in the work now, and months later, it can start producing. Some bloggers see results faster than others, but those who quit too early never discover what was possible.
Stay consistent, keep learning, and give your blog time to grow.
How to Pick a Blog Niche That Actually Makes Money
This was my first real lesson when I decided to start a blog: your niche matters. It is the main topic of your blog, and it can be more important than your writing skills or design when you are starting.
I chose mom life, budgeting, and working from home because those were things I was living through and searching for myself. That is the sweet spot: write about something you know while helping people who are actively searching for answers.
A profitable niche usually solves a problem. Personal finance, parenting, health, food, home organization, and career advice are all examples because people need useful information in these areas. It also helps if your niche has products or services you can recommend through affiliate marketing.
Do not stress about finding the perfect niche. Choose something you can write about consistently without running out of ideas. You can always refine it as you learn more about your readers.
Choosing a Blog Name and Buying Your Domain
Once I knew my niche, I needed a name. This part felt huge at the time, but honestly, do not overthink it. Your blog name should be simple, easy to spell, and give people a sense of what you write about.
I recommend keeping it short, two to three words maximum. Avoid numbers and hyphens in your domain name because they make it harder for people to remember and share. Also, go for a .com domain whenever possible because it is still the most trusted extension online.
You buy your domain name when you sign up for hosting, which brings us to the next step.
Self-Hosted WordPress Is the Only Way to Start a Blog Seriously
This is non-negotiable, and I say that with love. 😄 If you want to start a blog and make money, I recommend using a self-hosted WordPress blog with your own hosting plan. Not WordPress.com, Blogger, or Wix.
With self-hosted WordPress, you have much more control over your website and how you monetize it. Your blog becomes an asset you manage instead of relying entirely on another platform’s rules.
I use Hostinger for hosting and recommend it to beginners because it is affordable, beginner-friendly, and offers a simple WordPress installation. You can get started for a relatively low monthly cost, and depending on the plan, Hostinger may also include a free domain for the first year.

Setting Up Your Blog Design Without Losing Your Mind
After installing WordPress, you will need a theme, which controls the look of your blog. This is where many new bloggers waste too much time. I did too. I changed mine three times in my first month.
My advice? Pick a clean, simple, fast-loading theme and move on. Astra and Kadence are both free options that look professional, load quickly, and are easy to customize.
Your blog does not need to look perfect when you start. It needs to be readable, easy to navigate, and fast. That is it. Your content matters far more than your color palette, and keeping things simple can also help with performance.
Writing Blog Posts That Google Will Actually Rank
This is where I wish I had gotten help sooner. When I first started my blog, I wrote whatever I felt like. It was fun, but it was not strategic, so I got very little traffic.
The game changer was learning SEO, or search engine optimization. Simply put, it means creating content around things people are already searching for on Google. Instead of “My Thoughts on Saving Money,” I would write “How I Save Money While Raising a Family.” One is searchable. The other is not.
Now, before writing anything, I think about what my reader is searching for. I use tools like Google Search Console and Pinterest to see what people want, then create helpful posts that answer those questions.
Additionally, your posts need to be long enough to be thorough, typically 1500 words and above for competitive topics, but not so long that they become padded with fluff. Every sentence should earn its place. You can see how I approach this in posts like how I save money on birthday parties or how I save money while raising a family.
How Bloggers Actually Make Money (The Real Breakdown)
Okay, this is the part everyone is really here for. 😄 How does a blog actually make money? There is more than one way, and knowing your options early helps you plan smarter.
Affiliate marketing was my first income stream and is still one of my favorites. You recommend products or services you genuinely use, someone buys through your link, and you earn a commission. I started with Amazon Associates and later joined networks with higher commissions.
Display advertising is another option once your blog has consistent traffic. Ad networks pay based on your page views, so you do not have to sell anything directly.
Sponsored posts let brands pay you to feature their products or services. You can also sell digital products like ebooks, templates, or courses. Once you have an audience that trusts you, this can become highly profitable.
I made some costly money mistakes early on by not thinking about monetization soon enough. If you want to avoid the same mistakes, read about the money mistakes I made.

How to Get Traffic to Your Blog When You Are Just Starting Out
The biggest frustration for new bloggers is writing great posts that nobody reads. I felt that in my first few months. I published posts and heard crickets. 😊
Then I discovered Pinterest, and everything changed. Pinterest works like a search engine, making it a great way to get traffic to a new blog. I create simple pins in Canva and link them to my posts. You can also see how I organize and share my content on Pinterest.
Google SEO takes longer, but it can bring traffic for years. I still get readers from posts I published years ago.
I also wish I had started email marketing sooner. An email list gives you a direct connection with your readers instead of relying entirely on Google or Pinterest. Start building one from day one, even if it starts small.
How Long Does It Take to Make Money from a Blog
I am going to be completely honest with you because I think the internet owes you that. Most bloggers do not make significant money in their first three months. I made my first affiliate commission in month two: $11. I cried happy tears over that $11. 😂
By month six, I was making a few hundred dollars a month. By the end of year one, things had changed significantly. By year two, blogging had replaced my previous income, and eventually it grew into six figures.
Everyone’s timeline is different. It depends on your niche, consistency, SEO skills, and how quickly you build your email list. But successful bloggers have one thing in common: they did not quit when things were slow. They kept writing, learning, and showing up.
The Mindset You Need to Start a Blog and Stick With It
This might sound soft, but it is honestly one of the most important parts of blogging. Blogging will test your patience. Traffic will drop, some posts will get no attention, and there will be days you wonder why you started.
I have been there too. What kept me going was remembering why I started: I wanted to be home with my kids, earn my own money, and build something that was mine. Your reason has to be bigger than the frustration.
And please stop comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle. Bloggers making $10,000 a month started exactly where you are. It works, but you have to keep going.
Take care of yourself too. Burnout is real, so rest matters. My self-care ideas for moms can help you find balance while building something of your own.

You Are More Ready Than You Think
Starting a blog is not reserved for people with degrees in marketing or ten years of writing experience. I had neither. What I had was a story, a desire to help other moms, and the willingness to figure things out one step at a time.
You have that too. You just need to start.
Buy the domain. Set up the hosting. Write your first post. It does not have to be perfect. It just has to exist. You can improve everything as you grow, but you cannot improve something that has not started yet.
The version of you one year from now will be so grateful you did not wait any longer. Go start that blog. 💛
If this post helped you, save it to Pinterest and share it with a friend who has been talking about starting a blog forever. Let this be the nudge that finally gets them moving. 😄
